Lantern VPN Privacy Policy

Last updated: November 2025

Brave New Software Project, Inc. (“Lantern,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) provides Lantern VPN, a no-logs virtual private network (VPN). Lantern enables secure, private, and uncensored access to the internet.

We Do Not Collect or Store

  • Browsing history
  • Traffic destination or metadata
  • DNS queries
  • Connection logs (timestamps, session duration, or IP addresses linked to users)

Because this data is never created or stored, Lantern is unable to provide it to third parties, even if compelled by law.

If you have questions, contact us at [email protected].

Information We Collect

Account Information

  • Email address (for account creation and communication).
  • If you sign in with Apple or Google OAuth, we receive your email and, in Google’s case, your name. No other profile data is collected.

Payments

Payments for Lantern Pro are processed by trusted third-party providers (Apple App Store, Google Play, or Stripe). These providers may collect and store your payment details in accordance with their own privacy policies.
Lantern itself does not store payment details such as credit card numbers. We only receive limited information necessary to manage your subscription (e.g., confirmation of payment, subscription status, purchase/renewal date).

Support

If you contact us, we collect the information you provide (such as your email and message).
Support requests are managed through Freshdesk. Inactive support queries are automatically deleted from Freshdesk after 21 days.

Technical Data

Lantern uses internal systems to track device IDs and aggregate usage statistics, helping maintain service quality and enabling you to manage your Pro account.
Device IDs are randomly generated identifiers stored on your device that cannot be tied to your hardware (such as serial numbers, MAC addresses, or IMEI).
This information is not associated with your identity and is never tied to sites you visit.
Usage data is fuzzed to prevent timing correlation and cannot be used to reconstruct your activity.

Optional Diagnostics

You may choose to share anonymized diagnostic data (such as crash reports or speed tests) to help improve performance.
This data cannot be tied back to you and is fully optional.
Diagnostic data may be processed by Sentry, a third-party provider we use for error reporting and analysis. See Sentry’s Privacy Policy for more details.

How We Use Information

We process the limited information above to:

  • Provide and maintain the Lantern VPN service
  • Process Pro subscription payments
  • Respond to support requests
  • Improve service performance (when diagnostics are enabled)
  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell or share your personal information with advertisers.
Lantern operates on a freemium model, supported by subscriptions and grants, which enables us to provide free access in countries with internet censorship.

Sharing Information

We share information only with service providers who help us deliver Lantern:

  • Payment processors: Apple, Google, Stripe
  • Customer support provider: Freshdesk
  • Email delivery service: SparkPost (for account verification emails)
  • Error reporting service: Sentry (for crash diagnostics)
  • Analytics platforms: SignOz, BigQuery — used internally for service monitoring and aggregate performance data (not tied to user identity or activity)

Data Retention

  • Account and email data are kept as long as your account is active.
  • Payment records: Lantern does not store your full payment details. Limited transaction information (such as subscription type, date, and status) is retained only as long as required by law for tax and accounting purposes.
  • Support tickets are managed in Freshdesk and inactive queries are automatically deleted after 21 days.
  • Technical connection data (such as IP addresses) are not retained.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under privacy laws such as the GDPR (EU/UK), CCPA/CPRA (California), and similar laws elsewhere.
These may include the right to:

  • Access, correct, or delete your data
  • Request a copy of your data
  • Withdraw consent to processing (where applicable)
  • Delete your account at any time by going to Settings → Account → Delete Account and confirming with your password

To exercise your rights, email [email protected].

If you are located in the EU or UK and believe we are unlawfully processing your personal information, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Children’s Data

You must be at least 18 years old to use the Services.
In some jurisdictions (such as the EU/UK under GDPR), the minimum age may be 16. If you are below the legal minimum age in your jurisdiction, you may not use the Service.

Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in our services or legal requirements.
Updates will be posted here with a new “Last updated” date.
