Unblock AI tools
Access Google Gemini from anywhere
Gemini is available in 180+ countries, but blocked or limited in many of the places that need it most. Lantern gets you connected.
How to access Gemini with Lantern
Step 1: Get Lantern
Download Lantern, on your phone or computer. It's free.
Step 2: Open and Connect
Open Lantern and tap to connect. Lantern automatically picks the best protocol for your network, so there's nothing to configure.
Step 3: Open Gemini
Go to gemini.google.com or open the Gemini app. You're in.
Where is Gemini blocked or restricted?
Gemini's availability is tied to Google's. In countries where Google services are blocked entirely, Gemini doesn't work either. On top of that, some regions face additional restrictions due to data privacy regulations or Google's own rollout decisions.1
Countries where Gemini is blocked:
Countries where Gemini is restricted or limited:
- Russia (Google services partially restricted; Gemini unavailable due to U.S. sanctions)3
- Parts of the EU (free API tier unavailable due to GDPR; web app and paid tiers accessible)4
- Hong Kong and Macau (Gemini not supported by Google)5
Workplace networks, schools, and public Wi-Fi also commonly block AI tools. Lantern works in these situations too.
Why Gemini is harder to access than other AI tools
Because Gemini is a Google product, it's blocked in every country that blocks Google, which includes some of the world's most heavily censored networks. China's Great Firewall and Iran's filtering systems use deep packet inspection to identify and block Google traffic specifically.
Most VPNs can't reliably get through these systems. Their connections are detected and dropped within minutes.
Lantern was built for exactly this. It supports more circumvention protocols than any other VPN, and automatically switches between them as network conditions change. During Iran's 2022 internet shutdowns, Lantern carried 13% of all Iranian internet traffic while most commercial VPNs were blocked.
If you're in a country that blocks Google, Lantern doesn't just unblock Gemini. It also gives you access to Google Search, Gmail, Google Scholar, Google Play, YouTube, and every other Google service.

Footnotes
-
Google says the Gemini web app is available in over 230 countries and territories, but the mobile app and API have more limited availability. See Where you can use the Gemini web app and Available regions for the Gemini API. ↩
-
China has blocked Google services since 2010 through the Great Firewall. Gemini, as a Google product, is inaccessible without circumvention tools. ↩
-
Gemini is restricted in Russia, Iran, North Korea, Syria, and Cuba due to U.S. sanctions and export control laws administered by OFAC. Russia's Google restrictions are a combination of U.S. sanctions policy and Russian regulatory actions targeting foreign tech platforms. See TheDayAfterAI's regional restrictions report. ↩ ↩
-
The free tier of the Gemini API is unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The restriction is related to GDPR compliance: on free tiers, Google may use prompts for model improvement, which may not meet EU data protection requirements. Paid API tiers and the Gemini web app are accessible in the EU. Some Gemini mobile app features are also limited in EU countries. See AI Free API's guide on EU restrictions. ↩

Hong Kong and Macau are not supported for Gemini. Multiple user reports confirm that Gemini displays a "not supported in your country" message for Hong Kong users. Google's restriction on these territories parallels similar decisions by OpenAI and Anthropic, likely influenced by compliance concerns related to China's National Security Law. See user reports on Samsung Community and Cloudflare Community. ↩
