Reddit is one of the most blocked websites in the world, restricted across parts of Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. Lantern gets you back on, even in countries with aggressive filtering.
How to access Reddit with Lantern
Step 1: Get Lantern
Download Lantern on your phone or computer. It's free.
Step 2: Open and connect
Open Lantern and tap to connect. Lantern automatically picks the best protocol for your network, so there's nothing to configure.
Step 3: Enjoy Reddit
Open the Reddit app or go to reddit.com. You're in.
Where is Reddit blocked?
Reddit is blocked or restricted in more countries than most people expect. Unlike platforms that are targeted mainly for political reasons, Reddit often gets blocked because governments object to specific types of user-generated content, then block the entire platform rather than individual pages.
China blocks Reddit as part of the Great Firewall's broad restriction on Western platforms. Reddit was intermittently accessible for years, but has been consistently blocked since around 2018.1
Indonesia has blocked Reddit since 2014. The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology banned the site for hosting content containing nudity.2 The block has never been lifted, and Reddit remains one of the most commonly VPN-accessed sites in the country.
Turkey blocks Reddit as part of its broader content filtering practices. Turkey frequently restricts platforms that host content the government considers objectionable, and Reddit's open community structure makes it a regular target.3
Iran restricts Reddit along with most Western platforms. Access is intermittent and monitored by ISPs.1
Other countries where Reddit is blocked or restricted include:
- North Korea (all Western platforms blocked)
- Bangladesh (partially blocked, especially on mobile networks)
- UAE (blocked via national ISPs)
Reddit was briefly banned in Russia in 2015 over a post about growing mushrooms. The ban was lifted after Reddit removed the content, but the incident illustrated how a single post can trigger a nationwide block on a platform with millions of communities.4
What makes Reddit different from other blocked platforms
Most social media platforms get blocked for political reasons. Reddit gets blocked for those reasons too, but also because of its open, unmoderated structure. Governments that restrict content based on morality or religious norms (like Indonesia and parts of the Middle East) see Reddit's anything-goes community model as a problem they can't solve without blocking the whole site.
This means Reddit blocking is often DNS-level or IP-level filtering rather than the deep packet inspection used against platforms like Instagram or WhatsApp in countries like Iran and China. That's good news for VPN users, because simpler blocking methods are easier to bypass. But in countries that do use advanced filtering, like China, you still need a VPN that can handle DPI.
Why Lantern works where other VPNs don't
Most VPNs rely on one or two protocols, usually WireGuard or OpenVPN. These work fine for bypassing basic DNS blocks (like Indonesia's), but they fail in countries with advanced filtering systems.
Lantern runs more circumvention protocols than any other VPN, including Shadowsocks, VLESS, Hysteria 2, and WireGuard. When one protocol gets blocked, Lantern automatically switches to another. No manual configuration, no troubleshooting.
Whether you're accessing Reddit from behind Indonesia's content filter or China's Great Firewall, Lantern adapts to whatever's blocking you.
Lantern also uses Smart Routing, which only routes blocked or sensitive traffic through the VPN. Everything else goes direct. Reddit loads fast without slowing down the rest of your connection.
Lantern is built for exactly this
Lantern is a nonprofit VPN, built by a 501(c)(3) and trusted by over 250 million people worldwide. It's been keeping people connected to the open internet since 2013.
It's open source, independently audited, and maintains a strict no-logs policy. Every Pro subscription helps fund free access for people in the most restricted regions.
